Breast Implant & Breast Augmentation information

Breast enlargement or augmentation is the second most common female
cosmetic surgical procedure performed in America.  It can enhance the size
and shape of a woman's breast for a number of reasons:

  • To enhance the body contour of a woman who feels her breast size
    is too small.
  • To correct a reduction in breast size after pregnancy.
  • To balance a difference in breast size.
  • As a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.

By placing an implant beneath each breast, a woman's bust line can be
increased by one or more bra cup sizes.

Before you decide to proceed with surgery, think carefully about your
expectations and discuss these freely with Dr. Semlacher.

The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for
improvement, not perfection.  If you're physically fit and realistic in your
expectations, you most probably are an excellent candidate.

A breast implant is a silicone shell filled with salt-water or silicone gel.

The FDA has determined that silicone gel-filled implants, at present,
should be available only to women participating in approved studies.

Salt-water filled implants continue to be available to breast enlargement
patients on an unrestricted basis, pending further FDA review.

Breast implants can be round or anatomically shaped. They also can have a
smooth or textured shell.  Dr. Semlacher only uses anatomical implants if
the breast mound has an unattractive shape. If that is not your case he will
recommend a round implant. With respect to the shell of the implant, Dr.
Semlacher prefers using the smooth shell as he places the implant beneath
the chest wall muscle. Textured implants produce superior results if placed
beneath the gland but if placed beneath the muscle will cause greater fluid
accumulations that could compromise your cosmetic result.

Breast augmentation has increased 51% in the past two years and 306%
since 1992. But this is a a surgical procedure and there are some
associated risks.

Dr. Semlacher will discuss these with you in an open manner so that you
fully understand the risks and consequences of breast enlargement.

Dr. Semlacher's preference is to perform all breast augmentations under a
general anesthetic, so you will sleep through the entire procedure. This will
allow him to sit you upright several times during the procedure to assess
breast symmetry, shape, etc, ensuring the best possible cosmetic result
that he can deliver.

The surgery usually takes two to three hours to complete.
