“Is it safe?” is one of the most frequently asked questions we get from women who visit our Sacramento plastic surgery practice during their initial breast augmentation consultation. The answer is yes.

First of all, breast augmentation with implants is currently the queen of all surgical cosmetic procedures. Its popularity is attributed to its less recovery time and relatively safe nature. In addition, both saline and silicone implants are considered safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Neither silicone or saline has been associated with cancer, autoimmune disease, or any systemic disorder. Also, it has been shown that implants do not even interfere with breastfeeding as long as the right implant placement and incisions are carefully considered.

The Silicone Story

Silicone implants have been used for decades now. However in 1992, the FDA decided to remove them from the market due to allegations and lawsuits concerning its safety. Specifically, use of silicone implants were linked to increasing a woman’s risk to autoimmune conditions and connective tissue diseases.

After a thorough investigation by the FDA which lasted from 1992 to 2005, the FDA could not find solid evidence on the allegations. Thus, silicone implants were re-introduced for breast augmentation use in 2006. Since then, a lot of improvements in silicone implant design has been introduced, resulting to better breast enhancement results.
